2022 Chevrolet Colorado: What to Expect
The Chevrolet Colorado is a mid-size pickup for those who do not require a full-size truck or a V8 engine. The current design was introduced in 2021 and features four trim levels and three engine options, but the overall technical design is from 2015 and has proven to be highly popular with owners.
Walk along with us as we take a look at the new 2022 Chevrolet Colorado and focus on what buyers can expect from the latest iteration of the mid-size pickup.
2022 Chevy Colorado Redesign
The 2022 Chevrolet Colorado remains unchanged from the 2021 models, with Chevy instead opting for a “Trail Boss” off-road package for the LT and Z71 models as an optional kit. It was somewhat expected, as the current trim was only introduced last year and brought the Colorado in line with Chevrolet’s design philosophy and similar pickups from the other markets.
Luckily, after-market accessories such as front grills and headlights are available to customize your 2022 Chevy Colorado and make it look different from last year’s model.
Performance & Fuel Economy
The Colorado is available with three different engines: the base 2.5L gasoline I4, the beefy 3.6L gasoline V6 and the 2.8L Duramax I4 diesel. Choosing the V6 engine with its 8-speed automatic gearbox is recommended, as it offers greater power at a slightly lower fuel economy.
According to EPA ratings, the 2.5L engine gets up to 19 mpg** in the city and 25 mpg** on the highway. The V6 achieves about 18 mpg** in the city and 25 mpg** on the highway. The diesel is the marginal winner, with roughly 20 mpg** in the city and 30 mpg** on the highway. If you do a lot of long-distance towing, then the diesel engine is the right choice. However, the V6 offers the best in responsiveness and a smooth ride for everyday use.
Standard and Top Features
The standard features remain the same as last year’s models.
The Trail Boss package, available for the LT and Z71 models, adds a leveling kit that raises the suspension by one inch. Skid plates are attached to the chassis under the doors. Cosmetic changes include removing the front air dam, exterior badges black, red tow hooks and black 17-inch rims derived from the ZR2.
Pricing
Pricing remains consistent with last year since nothing has changed and is comparative with similar mid-size pickups from the other reputable manufacturers.
The big decision facing buyers is whether to go for the Trail Boss package or not, which is available for the LT at $2,995 MSRP* or the Z71 at $2,895 MSRP*.
2022 Chevy Colorado Price Chart
| Trim Levels | MSRP* |
|---|---|
| 2022 Chevrolet Colorado LT | $28,895 |
| 2022 Chevrolet Colorado Z71 | $39,995 |
| 2022 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 | $43,795 |
| 2022 Chevrolet Colorado Work Truck (WT) | $26,295 |
Safety
The Colorado received a four-star safety rating from the NHTSA. Key safety features include forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning and rear parking sensors.
The Colorado still lacks important driver-assistance technology, which may be irrelevant to some people or a deal-breaker for others, so it is best to thoroughly check if the Chevrolet Colorado has a particular feature that you consider indispensable and completely necessary.
Technology & Entertainment
As already stated, the current Colorado lacks the driver-assistance technology found in competitive models from other manufacturers.
The Colorado uses the Chevrolet Infotainment 3 Premium system and is tops regarding infotainment features in the mid-size pickup class. The WT model has a 7.0-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth audio streaming for two devices and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability; all the other models have an 8.0-inch display. An integrated 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot makes connecting to the world easy.
Interior Comfort & Cargo
The interior of the Colorado is spacious in the front, but the rear can be cramped for anybody but small kids. The materials used appear dated compared to other manufacturers, but apart from that, it is durable and perfectly adequate for a standard pickup in this price class.
The extended cab models feature a huge 6-foot-2-inch long truck bed with a cargo volume of 49.9 cubic feet, whilst the crew cab model allows buyers the option of the long bed or a shorter 5-foot-2-inch truck bed with a maximum capacity of 41.3 cubic feet instead. The long truck bed is amongst the largest for mid-size pickups currently available.
A Pickup That Works for You
The current generation Colorado is a functional mid-size pickup, especially when configured with the V6 engine and the Trail Boss package, and the newest model is just as exciting to see.
