Revamped for 2021, the new Chevy Colorado offers a thrilling ride both on and off the road. All Chevy Colorado trim levels have had a style update, with leather upholstery options on the upper levels to mask some less desirable plastic. Turbodiesel engines are available for all vehicle configurations, a rare feature for midsize trucks, and top-of-the-range Colorados can reach 60mph in just over six seconds.

The 2021 Colorado Chevy pays more attention to capability than gadgets and frills. Though not the most tech-packed truck, the Chevy is agile on just about all terrains and boasts an admirable towing and payload capacity. There are also plenty of extras available to make driving more practical and entertaining. The highlight is an eight-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

The extended cab option can make for cramped backed seats, but the driving position scores top marks across all trims. If you frequently tow or haul, you should consider going for a four-wheel drive, though rear-wheel drives are a strong budget option. Trailer-sway control comes as standard with all trim levels, though some features you might expect – like automatic emergency braking – are only available as add-ons.

Overall, the new 2021 Chevy Colorado is worth getting excited about, especially the Z71 and ZR2 models. Considering their affordability, all vehicles rank well against rivals in the same class. And while not the most futuristic midsize truck out there, it’s ahead of many competitors when it comes to performance.

2021 Chevy Colorado Trim Levels

The base-level Chevy Colorado was discontinued this year, which means four trims are available for 2021: WT, LT, Z71, and ZR2. The most affordable is the WT, followed closely by the LT. Moving up the price brackets are the Z71 and ZR2, respectively. But if you enjoy the thrill of the drive, you’ll appreciate the 308-horsepower V6 engine.

The 2021 Chevy Colorado WT comes as standard with an extended cab. The base configuration produces a respectable 200 horsepower, though the more powerful V6 is an optional extra. Standard features include smartphone integration, the Chevrolet Infotainment 3 system, a rear-view camera, and two USB ports. For a couple of thousand dollars more, the 2021 Chevy Colorado LT features additional USB ports, cloth upholstery, an eight-inch touchscreen, cruise control, a Wi-Fi hotspot and the EZ Lift & Lower tailgate.

The 2021 Chevy Colorado Z71 is the entry-level off-roader. The base configuration kicks out 308 horsepower, and features such as hill descent control, off-road suspension and an automatic locking rear differential make tackling most terrains a breeze.

The most rugged trim in the new line-up is the 2021 Chevy Colorado ZR2, the only one to come standard with four-wheel drive. Its features include off-road rocker protection, driver-selectable full-locking front and rear differentials and a two-speed transfer case. A power-adjustable passenger seat and leather upholstery make the ZR2 easy on the eye, while features such as the trailer brake controller add to its practical capabilities.

2021 Chevy Colorado Interior

The basic configurations of most 2021 Chevy Colorado trims feature plenty of space in the cockpit. If you’re used to large trucks, you’ll feel at home in the Colorado. The upholstery and use of plastic look somewhat dated, though genuine leather is available as an extra for the Z71 and comes standard with the ZR2.

You’ll find plenty of space under the crew cab’s rear seat and inside the center-console bin. Its two cargo beds are also more spacious than rival midsize trucks from Honda and Toyota. The cockpit will keep the driver and front passenger comfortable, though it can be a bit of a squeeze for passengers in the back.

Standard gadgets include smartphone integration, USB ports, a seven-inch touchscreen, satellite radio, a rear-view camera, Bluetooth connectivity, and a Chevrolet Infotainment 3 system. The off-roaders feature heated front seats, voice recognition, wireless device charging, HD Radio and rear parking sensors. The ZR2 also comes with leather seats and a power-adjustable passenger seat.

2021 Chevy Colorado Exterior

The exterior style of all Chevy Colorado trims has been updated for 2021. Lines and contours are more defined and sophisticated. The front fascia along with the badging, have been overhauled; the ZR2 has a distinctly aggressive face. New colors for this year include Sand Dune Metallic, Cherry Red Tintcoat and Bright Blue Metallic. But you can choose from 10 colors for the lower trims and seven for the off-roading trims.

2021 Chevy Colorado Standard Safety Features

The 2021 Chevy Colorado lacks a few safety features that you might expect to find as standard. Still, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gave it four out of five stars based on a series of roll and crash tests. Some handy standard features include a rear-view camera and the Teen Driver system, which lets you set volume and speed limits for secondary drivers.

The upper trims come with extras such as rear parking sensors and off-road rocker protection, hill descent control and locking differentials. Features such as cruise control, lane departure warning and forward-collision warning are available for all models.

Chevy Colorado Performance and MPG

The 2021 Chevy Colorado WT and LT come standard with a 2.5-litre engine, though a 2.8-litre diesel alternative that produces an admirable 369 pound-feet of torque is available. The base engine can feel a little sluggish, but the V6 is a different breed. The standard V6 can take the ZR2 from 0 to 60 mph in just 6.1 seconds; the turbodiesel counterpart reaches the same speed in about 9.1. With that amount of power and strength comes superb towing ability. The lower trims can haul about 3,500 pounds, while the upper trims can haul up to 7,000.
